Renting with Pets

When you are looking for a new home to rent, and you have a pet, it always presents a hurdle. However, just because the listing says “No Pets” it doesn’t always mean that the landlord will not accept pets. Usually, this information is placed in the listing because the landlord/owner would like to reserve the option to to make the decision on an individual basis.

Oftentimes, the owner will accept a pet or pets; however, they may only accept 1 dog of a certain size or a cat, if it’s an indoor cat. One never really knows what the owner may be thinking. He/She may have had a bad experience with a previous tenant and their pet(s). Additionally, I find it very helpful to mention that the cat(s) are totally indoor pets, hence no fleas, or that the cat(s) are declawed and spayed/neutered.

One of my recent landlords accepted two dogs because the dogs were therapy dogs, hence, calm and nurturing. In another instance, I asked the owner to meet the tenant’s dog; my clients signed the lease that afternoon!! Therefore, please don’t disregard a house or condo on the basis that the listing says “No Pets” - there are always exceptions.
