Situated equally distant from downtown Manhattan and the city of New Haven, Fairfield is an affluent coastal community with pristine beaches and a desirable combination of cultural and leisure oriented amenities. Overlooking the Mill River, a selection of superbly landscaped parks offer residents an array of outdoor activities such as hiking, bicycling, and picnicking.
The town offers a wide range of housing choices from condominiums to single family homes in a variety of styles and price ranges. You'll find splendid colonials dating back to the 1700s as well as Victorians and more contemporary designs. Inward from the coast are some wonderful family neighborhoods lined with modest bungalows and 1950s era ranches. Many antique homes, churches other well preserved buildings in town are recognized as national historic landmarks.
Freshwater swimming is available at Lake Mohegan and, in the winter months, ice skaters gather at Owen Fish Park. A small coastal section of the town known as Southport, a former shipbuilding community, is today one of the most prestigious yachting societies in the Northeast. Fairfield University, a prestigious Jesuit institution of higher learning, has risen to prominence in recent years as a suburban Boston College.
Fairfield is the last reasonably quiet community heading north along interstate highway 95 before reaching the hustle and bustle of Bridgeport, the state's largest city.
